Doctor Technique:
In a university experiment, an actor disguised as a doctor ordered experiment participants to give an electrical shock to a "heart patient" to stimulate his heart, warning the shock could make the patient unconscious, causing grave danger. 65% were persuaded to comply. Billboard Technique: In another university experiment homeowners were asked for their permission to erect large "safe driving" billboards in their front yards. 76% of the homeowners in one neighborhood were persuaded to say yes. Perception Technique: "Identical twins" using the same script were sent into an office building to see if they could persuade receptionists to let them in to see executives. One succeeded just 24% of the time. The other persuaded the receptionists 60% of the time. |

(2) Persuade By Presenting The Right Personal Image
Unless people perceive you, personally, as credible -- the way you
look, etc. -- you're dead, no matter what words you use.
For example, if you are trying to sell investments, you would
likely be far more successful if you looked like a conservative
banker in a blue suit and muted tie instead of a long-haired
surfer in sandals.

(3) Persuasion Using The Right "Paralanguage"
Paralanguage is a combination of body language -- posture, facial
expression, etc. and voice tone, pitch, inflection and volume.
It has been estimated that paralanguage communicates some
70 to 80% of your feeling and meaning.
In other words, if you confidently say, "I'm sure
this will work for you," you won't persuade the other person
if your paralanguage -- a shaky hand, for example --
is communicating just the opposite -- that
you're really not at all confident that it will work.
(4) Persuading With "Rapport"
Our definition of rapport is a simple one:
A feeling of trust and liking you have with the other person.
This is critical because, if the other person doesn't trust
or like you, again . . . you're dead. Think about
it yourself:
Are you going to buy something from -- or start a
personal relationship with -- someone you don't like or trust? No way.
So, how to build rapport with the other person? The best way is
to find "common interests" -- whether that might be golf, gardening
or good movies -- and use that to build a relationship.
Once the relationship is established, you are in position to
build rapport -- and, then, be successful at persuasion.
(5) How To Persuade With Your Actions
Effective persuasion often occurs when you rely on the old principle
that actions speak much louder than words. A restaurant owner
wanting to increase business by attracting travelers on a
nearby toll highway put this principle into action for profit.
He approached the toll booth attendants and told them
he would very much appreciate it if they would refer travelers
asking about a good place to eat to his restaurant.
